Shawn Kelley—Alvin & Sally Beaman Scholarship

What is your hometown, major, and year in school?
I’m originally from West Palm Beach, FL, although I have lived in Knoxville since 1994. I am majoring in Music Education and will be a senior this fall.
What has the Beaman scholarship meant to your academic career, and what has it meant for your family?
The scholarship has relieved a terrible financial burden from our family. Both of my parents are disabled, one to the point that she can no longer work, so we are very thankful for the scholarships that I currently receive.
What is your most memorable UT experience so far?
My most memorable experiences at UT have taken place while performing with the Pride of the Southland Marching Band. Marching to the Stadium, performing the Pregame show, opening the T, executing the Tennessee Circle Drill, marching before the President of the United States at the 2004 Inauguration Parade, and marching through the streets of Galway and Dublin, Ireland—each of these experiences will stay with me for the rest of my life.
How did you decide on your major?
I decided to be a music educator while still in high school. I was actively involved in the band program throughout my secondary education and realized that music was what I wanted to do.
What makes UT so special? Why did you choose UT?
I believe that UT is special because of its many traditions. I chose UT for many reasons, but the most important of these included the school’s well-reputed music education program as well as the university’s quality as a whole.
What is your favorite place on campus?
My favorite place on campus is a bench that is positioned outside of the music building between the band room and the auditorium. It is an excellent location to practice playing my tuba on warm days.
What would you like for the donor(s) of your scholarship to know about you? What would you like to say to the donor(s)?
I would like the donors of my scholarship to know how grateful I am for their generosity, for I would probably not have enjoyed the opportunities I’ve had at UT if it were not for their financial support.
Describe the UT Spirit.
UT spirit is a distinct feeling of loyalty, and to be honest, this feeling can be best observed at sporting events.
What are your plans after graduation?
I plan to pursue a graduate degree in tuba performance (the school has not yet been determined) and continue on to enjoy a career in music.
