The Campaign for Tennessee

When Dr. John Petersen visited the university in 2004, he immediately noticed the special relationship between the university and its supporters. After he became the university’s president in July that year, he took stock of the university’s strengths and formulated an ambitious plan with other university leaders by identifying six areas where the university should concentrate its efforts:

  • Student access
  • Student success
  • Research
  • Outreach
  • Economic development
  • Globalization

In other words, the University of Tennessee seeks to provide world-class education and research and to put the fruits of those efforts to work for all Tennesseans.

As the state’s flagship higher education institution and the organization best positioned to accept this challenge, the University of Tennessee is embarking on its third capital campaign, The Campaign for Tennessee: A Spirit • A Vision • A Plan.

A Spirit • A Vision • A Plan

What can the University and its supporters bring to the table?

A Spirit refers to the university’s proud past; the pride and traditions of Tennessee; what is unique and special about this university and its supporters, whether they are alumni, friends, or fans. Our proud past.

A Vision refers to the philanthropic instincts of the university’s donors who give of their financial resources, time, and energy to make UT better, paired with the new ideas, direction, and leadership of President John Petersen and his staff. Making a difference.

A Plan refers to how the university will implement these ideas, with the investments made by its philanthropic donors, to make the University of Tennessee—and the state of Tennessee—better. A blueprint for the future.

As UT undertakes the most ambitious campaign in its 214-year history, the university is calling on its friends and supporters to give generously. This nationwide effort seeks to build on the foundation established in the university’s two earlier capital campaigns and make a difference for the future success of all Tennesseans.
